Structural Integration is a holistic system of soft tissue manipulation and movement education. It was developed by Dr. Ida P. Rolf, a biochemist who found she could achieve changes in posture and structure by manipulating the body’s connective tissue. She called her work Structural Integration.
The work is based on the idea that fascia – the fibrous layers covering muscles – stiffens, shortens, and loses its elasticity after prolonged poor posture and mental and emotional stress. Garrell uses his elbows, fingers, and knuckles to stretch and open fascia to correct the habitual patterns of misalignment in the head, shoulders, abdomen, pelvis, and legs. This helps open up breathing, improve digestion, balance the nervous system, and improve physical and emotional health. Many find it helpful in bringing relief from chronic pain. The classic treatment is series of ten sessions.
Structural Integration originated from Dr. Rolf working with yoga. She tried to help friends and family with yoga, and found that most people couldn't move in such way to really free themselves. Taking matters into her own hands, as it were, SI was the result of many years of study and research. Structural Integration is quite literally attempting to wrestle yoga into bodies.
